Some things to think about when writing teen fiction:
Someone once asked the difference between teen fiction and fiction for adults. There really isn’t that much difference at all. For teens, everything is seen through fresh emotions and eyes, they don’t have the same life experience (they’re just starting out!) and everything is keenly felt. Issues can range from trouble at home to hard-hitting dilemmas such as drugs and life threatening illness. However, if you are submitting a story with a hard-hitting issue, please keep the writing mostly clean. Sure, we might have a character that has a drug problem, but the audience doesn’t need to hear every dirty word that comes out of the antagonist’s (or protagonist’s) mouth. Be creative. Also, the big thing that teen fiction all has in common is about the protagonist (or sometimes the ‘anti-hero’) – they’ll be teens themselves.
